Harley McDonald memorial ride Saturday to raise funds for UI Stead Family PICU

The McDonald family of Scranton is continuing their drive to raise funds for the Burn Center  at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital in Iowa City. They have an event planned for Saturday, Aug. 26, with the proceeds designated toward their goal of $100,000.

The event, Take a Road Trip in memory of Harley McDonald #314, begins and ends at Just One More in Jamaica. Registration begins at 10 am with everyone leaving no later than noon.

All types of vehicles are welcome to participate. The route includes Whistlin’ Donkey in Woodward, Whatcha Smokin’ in Luther, Copperhead Saloon and Grill in Stratford, Riverside Tavern in Lehigh, Burt’s Dog House in Boxholm, 209 Main in Paton and 30 Yard Line in Grand Junction.

Drivers and passengers should be back by 6 pm. The winners of the raffle drawing will be announced at 7 pm. The evening concludes with music by the band Dirt Road Divide.

Registration is $20 per person and includes five tickets for the raffle drawing for a smoker/grill from Van Wall Equipment.

Harley McDonald was seriously burned on New Year’s Day, 2022, in a fire at a cabin in the woods near his home outside of Scranton. He died of his injuries on January 14, 2022.

The money raised through this and other fundraisers will be used for continuing education for the doctors and staff who cared for Harley during his 14-day battle after suffering severe burns to more than 90 percent of his body. The family is working to raise enough money to name room #314 in memory of Harley, as that was the room he was moved to while in the PICU. #314 was Harley’s race number while he was an avid motocross rider.
